“And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” – Philippians 2:8
This is perhaps the most beautiful verse in the Bible. It describes God’s plan of action to save sinners. God’s sacrifice, humility and humiliation. It shows the relentlessness of God persuing lost humanity. Nothing would stop Him from coming to save. He would stop at nothing and stoop down low to accomplish salvation for us. Even while humanity cared nothing for God, God went to the cross to save.
Found “in appearance as a man.” As a result, He humbled Himself and became obedient. God’s humility is striking. He acted human and accomplished salvation for all humanity.
Verse 8 is a summary of the preceding verses that come before it.
“5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.” – Philippians 5-7
He has served us and we can serve Him.
You and I are in the appearance as humans as well. And like Jesus we have a responsibility.
Wherever we find ourselves, with whomever, and in everything we do, let us do it with humility and obedience to God.
“4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love” – Ephesians 1:4
A good reminder. Thank you for your “tell somebody” applications.
