10 Things Christians do “Daily”

“Go to church.” “Be salt and light.” “Be nice to everyone” and “be like Jesus.” That is what we often hear, but what does the Bible actually say about what an every day Christian is supposed to do?

Below is an interesting list of ten things the Scripture describes as the “daily” duties of a follower of Jesus Christ.

Pray “daily”

“Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11)

When teaching on prayer, Jesus compared the results of prayer to “our daily bread.” Without asking our heavenly Father for food, we don’t eat. If we do not pray, we cannot receive the life God intended. We will not be fed and faith will starve and fade away.

Take courage. When we pray, God hears and answers. Things happen! When we do not pray that day, it would seem nothing tends to happen.

For a Christian, prayer is not optional. It is essential. Like breathing, nothing sustains our life in Christ life prayer.

Pray daily. Pray bold, believing, faith-filled prayers that expect the kingdom of heaven to respond. Pray today. Pray again. Breathe. Don’t forget to breathe!

Take up your cross “daily”

“[Jesus] said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.” (Luke 9:23-24)

The benefits of the good news of Jesus come as a result of your personal choice. First, you must deny self. (It’s OK, the old life will not impress you anymore anyway. God’s way is better.)

The second choice is just as important; to “take up his cross ‘daily.'” Daily: not periodically, when it feels convenient, or when it will make you successful.

Taking up our cross is required for Christian living. The phrase is repeated in all the synoptic Gospels (Matthew Mark and Luke). But Luke, who was a doctor, is the only one who gives you a “daily” prescription. Every day is a new day to take up your cross.

Be together “daily”

“So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:46-47)

A family that stays together grows together. Christian unity grows through community.

As we “live by faith” (Galatians 2:20), we are also commands is people to “love one another.” Believers do not focus on their differences. The world may define us differently, but in God we are defined sufficiently through the cross. There is only one cross and one Jesus who saves. We honor God by honoring our unity in Jesus Christ our Lord. Through our treatment of one another, God is revealed.

As Christ’s followers continue coming together and worshiping together, they talk more about Jesus together. Talk about Him daily and you will find a church that praises Him “daily” will also grow “daily.”

Win souls “daily”

“So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.” (Acts 16:5)

Churches who are strong in faith win souls. Strong faith comes with confidence.

Church leaders should instill confidence. That is what was happening in Acts 16. Paul and Timothy traveled to a confused church and communicate the decrees made by the apostles; to clarify expectations so the church could be confident.

Our confidence in the good news of Jesus is the key to strong faith (and strong churches). Religious opinions cause indecision and confusion. The cross brings clear confidence. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

When Christ is our daily confidence, faith is strengthened and the more we will see people responding to Christ’s call of salvation.

There is good news in the world for our broken world; “Jesus saves!”

Teach Scripture “daily”

“And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.” (Luke 19:47-48)

Good teaching makes a heart glad! Nothing touches a believers heart like learning more about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Jesus made a daily habit of teaching; sitting with anyone who would come. He taught the word of God. His message brought correction and always pointed toward hope and the way of salvation. He never taught a religion. And the people wanted more!The word of God refreshes the soul, but it can also offend human pride.

Beware: God’s law does not bend or endorse human opinion. The religious leaders in Jesus’ day tried to destroy Jesus because His teaching made them look bad. So let us teach one another while watching over our hearts. Stay humble and flexible as you learn His word together every day.

Preach Jesus “daily”

“And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” (Acts 5:42)

Daily – the disciples preached and taught about Jesus being the Christ.

Then, one day, the disciples were beaten and told not to speak in the name of Jesus.

The next day, they joyfully returned to their “daily” routine.

In the Bible, suffering may be necessary sometimes, but it is never the goal.

We do not preach to get into trouble, but we do preach Christ to get people out of trouble! There is no other hope but Christ Jesus alone.

If (or rather when) we suffer, it should be the result of our daily practice of preaching Jesus. The result should be more preaching!

Talk about Jesus. Preach about Jesus. Teach about Jesus. Do it for the sake of Christ. Not to draw attention to any person. All attention and glory belongs to Jesus.

Search the Scriptures “daily”

“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” (Acts 17:11)

We live in a broken world. It is so broken that none of us are able to imagine what it was originally created to be like. Those who do not know God and certainly those who know God can see there is also much evil in the world, in fact, 1 John 5:19 tells us “the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.” The evil one will also sway you as well if he can!

Thankfully, we have the Bible to align us with God. The Apostle Paul gave some sage, fatherly advice to his young leader Timothy. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

The Bible may stand in stark contrast to popular opinion, traditions or local culture. Therefore, Christians must make a conscious effort to discover God’s word for themselves.

Faith cannot be built by reducing it to singing the latest worship song or attending a local (or mega) church. Those things can help, but faith must be built upon the unchanging, immovable Word of God. The Bible is our source of God-fearing hope. Let us return to the word daily and build our lives upon it.

Discuss Scripture “daily”

“But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.” (Acts 19:9)

Hard hearts refuse reason. Soft hearts are not afraid to talk.

The Apostle Paul had just led 12 people to “believe… on Christ Jesus,” baptised them in water, then laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit, evidenced by speaking in tongues and prophesying! (see Acts 19:4-7)

Naturally, this would require some sort of discussion (or explanation). So he stayed on for three months to reason with the people about this new phenomenon known as “the kingdom of God.”

Discussing Scripture is necessary to establishing Christian community. Those who love the Lord share the word freely and benefit from it. But beware! Those who do not love [or know] Him will be hardened through their own pride and reasoning.

It is through the daily discussion of the Scriptures that our human minds marvel and are filled with wonder and the revealed wisdom of God.

Carry responsibility “daily”

“besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches.” (2 Corinthians 11:28)

In 2 Corinthians 11, the Apostle Paul makes a list of his sufferings, including “stripes above measure, prisons, he was beaten with rods, stoned, shipwrecked, faced robbers and more! Through all that happened, and despite it all, Paul continued caring for the churches in his care. He never used his circumstances to excuse him from his daily responsibilities.

What has the Lord entrusted into your care? You might be blessed with a family to look after. …Perhaps you have employees to look after or a boss who needs a special employee help and to pray for them! …Some of us may have time to spare on your neighbors. And still others have resources to steward to advance the kingdom of God.

Christians represent Christ by keeping with their responsibilities, not through irresponsibility.Taking responsibility gives God the ability to work through us to change the world we live in.

Exhort one another “daily”

“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hebrews 3:13)

Today is your chance to exhort a fellow follower of Jesus Christ. This is part of our sacred, “daily” duty. And I pray that you would find it to be an absolute privilege!

All of us need friends who cheer us on even in the hardest of times; when it matters most.

The Apostle Paul stated that we should “walk by faith, not by sight.” But He never told us to walk alone! The Christian life requires a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. But the expectation is that we do not do it alone.

I need you. You need me, and many others. That is why attending a local church is so important.

Please note, however, that exhortation has an expiration date. It only works when it is needed and while a person is alive. Do you know a friend who walks with God but is facing a great challenge? Don’t wait until the danger has passed. Exhort them in the midst of their difficulty when it matters most.

Exhort someone today, and you will also find your faith rising and will begin to see new possibilities in God.
